History of Sculptures in India
Sculptures in India have long found discoveries of all, which is ‘Great Bath’ of ‘Mohenjodaro’. In that era, sculptures were made of Teracotta works & Mud Bricks.
With the prevalence of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam & Jainism in later centuries, the sculptures of India saw a new path. In their influence, the intricate carvings beautified Temples, Stupas, caves & other religious buildings. The ‘Khajuraho’ (Madhya Pradesh) &‘TajMahal’ (Agra) are the greatest examples of glorious Indian sculptures.
Types of Indian Sculptures
Many types of Indian Sculptures have emerged out since old era, from using cheap to expensive materials in building of sculptures.
a) Bronze Indian Sculptures
India is the biggest bronze carving producer & it had made its name in the world for it. Indian Bronze sculptures in form of Hindu deities & saints were hugely popular in south of India in 17th century. These sculptures contained certain mysticism about our old cultures of Hinduism, Jainism & Buddhism.
b) Wooden Indian Sculptures
Wooden carvings too, in India are quite famous for its elaborated carvings. These styles of complicated work on idols of Hindu God & Goddess, Toys etc .Every Area in India have particular style of wooden carvings.
c) Marble Indian Sculptures
In India Marble Sculpturing is quite locally, available .Marble carving also had fine carvings & intricate designs on them. Indian Marble style Sculptures were built for sacred intentions.
d) Sand Indian Sculptures
The Sand type sculptures were originated in Orissa, India. These types of sculptures can take any shape & form.
e) Stone Indian Sculpture
Himachal Pradesh in India has some great depiction of the stone carvings in form of their temples of Hindu God & Goddess. They have some elegant architectural presentations.
Further to above, there are some other very peculiar styles of Sculptures prevalent on Indian soil like Ivory & Bone carvings, Clay sculptures, Garden sculptures etc.
The well-known Religious sculptures like
Hindu Temples Sculptures- With the advent of Buddhism in India, the temple type Indian sculpture grew with a great pace. Buddhism’s spread bought a change in the architecture of the religious buildings & their concept. Later on Hinduism‘s influence bought the temple’s construction in stone for the first time in Indian sculpture’s field. The extraordinary imagery portrayed on the walls was mainly of Hindu Deities brought from Indian Mythologies. Christian Temple Sculptures- India has being land of many migrated people & cultures, Portuguese & Dutch colonies, which gave new form Indian sculptures in India like Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, Church of Sacred Heart in New Delhi. These models of Christian Indian sculpture were in combination of gothic style from Europe & Indian style well.
Buddhist Indian sculptures- ‘Ashoka’ in his reign adopted Buddhist style of architecture, as he was a strong believer of the same. Mauryan Rule was impacted by Buddhist artwork, ‘Stupas’ & Ashoka’s Pillars are the explicit example of Buddhism Charm.
Jain Indian Sculptures- The sculptures in Jainism are made out of Marble unlike in other religion in which Indian sculptures are made out of stone carvings.
