Indian Music has delightful savor to it. Music in India from the time when man started talking is a way to express feeling in the form of spirituality, culture & love. Indian Music is well known for its Classical, Folk or Regional, Film Music or other popular music. Musician in India are performing all over the world & gaining high-rise popularity. Indian Music too is the blend of many cultures, as the migration of different cultures in pre historic times affected Indian Music too. Music is the soul of every Indian.
Indian Music can be broadly classified into below headings-
A) Classical Music
Classical type of music is originated from many ‘Vedas’ & inspired by many Indian folk music. It is also most complex & respected form of music in India. ‘Carnatic Music’ & ‘Hindustani Music’ are further parts of classical form of Indian music. Hindustani Music is from North India & truly inspired by the ‘Vedic’ times & has Persian & Regional music influence too. Unlike Hindustani Music, Carnatic Music is from south India & it purely based on singing. Carnatic music dates back to 16th century AD but certainly melodious until now.
B) Regional Music or folk music
Regional Indian music is originated from different parts of India, giving a rich flavor to different kind of Indian music. It is truly vast as Indian culture itself.
Types of Regional music in India
1) Bhangra-is high tempo combination of dance & music particularly famous in northern India region of Punjab & done by ‘Sikhs’ (Turbanated' people).As India is the land of crops & farmers, ‘Bhangra’ is done especially on the day of ‘Baishaki’, to celebrate harvesting of the crop every year & every other auspicious occasions.
2) Dandiya-is the folk art of state of Gujarat, it is a mix of music plus dance form done specially ‘Navratri’ festival in the month March or April every year in order to impress Indian Goddess.
3) Lavani-is also blend of both music & dance of Maharastra, on quick beats of ‘dholak’(Indian Musical instrument) only female dancers performs in shows & they sing & dance in a beautiful attire (9 yards of ‘Sari’).
4) Rajasthani Music-is a huge combination of many type musicians ‘sapera’,’bhopa’,’jogi’,’langa’. This Indian music has variety & is dedicated or done to impress god & goddess. Rajasthani music like bhajans, khartal, Maand, Shehnai is performed now in festivals, fairs & other special occasions.
5) Bhavageete-is music form of singing poem about love, nature etc, & different from ‘Ghazals’, which is a type of folk music. This Indian music is performed in state of Maharastra & Karnataka in their respective native language Marathi & Kannada.
6) Pandavani-is a regional music very famous in Chattisgarh & its neighboring area of Andhra Pradesh. Pandavani is a form of singing story recitation of Pandav’s achievements & their era. Tejan Bai was a renowned singer of today’s time.
C) Indian Film Music
Indian film music is popular worldwide & it resides in heart of every Indian. Indian Movies are made in various languages have routine song & dancer numbers in them. These songs are utterly melodious & are based on theme of love, hate, relationships, sentimental values etc. A team of people comprising of singers (both male & female) music composers, lyricist, other musicians & Technicians, makes Indian film music. The uniqueness of Indian films is the songs in them. One can take feel of this Indian music easily available in the market in form CDs, DVDS & Cassettes.
D) Ghazals & Shayari
Ghazals & Shayari’s are the intergral part of Indian music, as from the historic times people had involved themselves into poetry &literature & ghazals & shayari are part of it. Song formation is based on Urdu lyrics in it & that is why it is very popular still in India & Pakistan.
The other kind of music distinctively favorite in India is Qawwalis, Indian Popular music, Gangasangeet, Rabindra sangeet, Western Classical Music, Other Dance music.
